Cheer Bandwagon
Ok, I’m totally on the Cheer bandwagon…not that I LOVE all the content but when it kept popping up everywhere, I had to give it a peep.
Now that I’m on the bandwagon though, I have a new dream…and that dream is that that the trend of profiling VERY competitive programs of amateur fringe group sports will continue. Because this may lead them to marching band. And that may lead them to my high school’s program (Avon Marching Black & Gold.) And THAT would amuse me to no end.
Being in that band in HS had all the same vibes as Cheer (with MANY more people involved, like 200 instead of 40). I’m only on ep 3 but it’s bringing back memories for REAL. The intensity involved, the approach to practices, the questionable teaching/coaching methods, the destroying your body at a way too young age, your team being “known” but only in a super small/niche community, the kinda scary leader who is littering their fingers with allllll the championship rings they can.
Being part of a dynastic, world champion level program in a super niche space is…interesting. I could probably say about 1.5 million more words on it, and it would boil down to “I have very complicated feelings about the impact that experience had on my life.”
But regardless, I’d be amused as hell to watch it on Netflix.
I feel like I never talk about this here. I mean I guess there’s no reason to bring up my 20 year old high school marching band experience but damn if Cheer didn’t weirdly seat me back in it.
